The River of Thoughts

Dissolving Tension

The sun was warm, casting a golden glow on the world around them, while the shade of a nearby willow tree offered a cool respite. The monks, with their serene presence, seemed to merge with the tranquil environment.

One of the monks, with eyes like pools of calm water, spoke softly, "Now, let's shift our focus to our bodies. Start at the top of your head and move slowly downward. Notice any sensations, tension, or relaxation."

Robin closed their eyes, letting the monk's words guide them. They began at their scalp, where they felt the faint tickle of hair moving with the breeze. Their awareness moved down to their forehead, where they noticed a slight furrowing from worry. As they reached their face, the cool breeze kissed their cheeks, a welcome contrast to the warmth of the sun.

When Robin's focus reached their shoulders, they felt the weight of stress that had settled there, a constant reminder of life's pressures. The monk's voice floated through the air like a gentle river current, "Breathe into the tension, imagine it melting away."

Robin took a deep breath, envisioning the tension dissolving with each exhale. It wasn't easy; thoughts of a recent argument with a friend kept intruding, like stubborn clouds on a sunny day. Frustration began to bubble up, making it difficult to stay present. The monk seemed to sense this struggle and continued with unwavering calm, "It's natural for thoughts to come and go. Acknowledge them, then gently bring your focus back to your breath and body."

With patience and the monk's soothing guidance, Robin gradually felt more in tune with their body. The tension in their shoulders began to ease, each breath carrying away a bit more stress. Robin could feel the ground beneath them, solid and supportive, and the simple act of being still and aware started to feel like a balm for their restless mind.

As Robin continued this journey inward, they noticed how their body responded to the environment around them—the soft rustling of leaves, the distant call of a bird, the rhythmic flow of the river. All these sensations, so often overlooked, now felt vivid and grounding.

By the time the monk invited them to open their eyes, Robin felt a newfound sense of peace. The argument with their friend still lingered in their mind, but it no longer felt overwhelming. They had found a small oasis of calm within themselves, a place to return to whenever the world outside became too chaotic.
