Chapter 2: The Dance of Decline
Learning to Say "No"
Determined to regain control over her life, Mira sought out Thaddeus at the tea house. She explained her dilemma, the exhaustion she felt from being pulled in so many directions by Aurelius’s relentless invitations. Thaddeus listened, his face thoughtful as he sipped his tea.
“Saying ‘no’ is an art, Mira,” he finally said, his tone gentle but firm. “In Aethra, refusal must be delivered with honesty and respect. You need to be direct, yet considerate—clear about your boundaries without seeming dismissive.”
Mira frowned. “How do I do that without offending him? He’s so… persistent.”
Thaddeus smiled. “Begin by expressing gratitude for the invitation and then honestly explain your need for space. Be firm but kind. It’s not about making excuses; it’s about valuing your time as much as his.”
Mira nodded, feeling a mix of apprehension and determination. She decided to try Thaddeus’s approach. The next time she received an invitation to one of Aurelius’s gatherings, she responded directly: “Lord Aurelius, I appreciate your kind invitation and the wonderful times I’ve had at your past events. However, I find myself needing some quiet time to rest and reflect. I hope you understand.”
She waited anxiously for his response, unsure if her honesty would be well received. To her surprise, Aurelius replied with grace: “I understand completely, Mira. Everyone needs time to themselves. Perhaps we can share tea another day, when you feel more at ease?”
Mira felt a small victory—a step toward reclaiming her time.
